And this is exactly what happens to Mr. Taschenbier. You can't see his recurring transformations from the outside. But his behavior changes all the more: he's just as greedy, chirpy and cheeky as our Sams. But when he changes back again, he can't remember anything. And what only we know: If Sams stays with the Taschenbiers, then this transformation will continue until Mr. Taschenbier himself has completely turned into a Sams!

Jean receives in payment for seven years of work with a master craftsman a gold nugget. He then exchanges this nugget for a horse, then the horse for a cow, the cow for a pig, the pig for a goose, the goose for a sharpening stone. Finally, he loses the stone by dropping it in a well. After losing the sharpening stone, he is relieved because it weighed heavy, and continues his happy journey to his mother's house. On his way home, he keeps running into Knudsen the Merchant and his beautiful daughter Elisabeth.

When Hans gets tired of carrying the heavy lump, the ignoramus trades the onerous treasure for a willful horse. Realizing he's no rider, Hans trades the mount for a cow, and unable to milk it properly makes another trade, for a sheep, next trades again for a pig.
